Bilingual Book Club
A pilot Bilingual Book Club for parents was implemented at a local elementary school to support parents with hands-on literacy strategies that could be implemented at home. This parent book club had a total of 15 parents that gathered for a total of 6 sessions, each 75 minutes long. Parents shared ideas, understandings, and viewpoints on a book that was offered in English and Spanish.
The following cycles, this parent book club increased to a total of 20 parents, and followed the same structure of 6, 75-minute sessions. The culminating activity allowed for parents to become authors and create their very own chap-book that revolved around a theme of their choice. It included poetry, short stories and visuals, using scaffolded templates and analysis of different writing styles practiced in previous sessions. The chap-books were exhibited during a Literacy Night event.
“Language was not a barrier, because any parent, regardless of language, could join in and have conversations about a common text. The best part for me was having the opportunity to show my children that I am also a reader and a student like them.”
