World Autism Acceptance Day

Today is World Autism Acceptance/Awareness Day. April 2nd is an internationally recognized day that encourages communities to raise awareness about individuals with autistic spectrum disorders including autism and Asperger syndrome throughout the world.

While there is still so much to learn about neurodiversity and ASD, we have made strides on being more inclusive in sharing stories that are representative of individuals on the spectrum in literature, film, tv, and more. There is still much we can work on, but together we can aim for inclusivity and acceptance.

As a mother to an autistic child, and newly embarked on this journey as a neurodiverse family, I can only hope that neurodiverse children and adults are not only seen but also given the opportunity to be themselves and highlight their strengths as individuals. My goal is that Equity Through Literacy continues to focus on representation of all communities in the resources we provide to our families, and provide the same opportunities that are given to neurotypical families in order support their development in and love for literacy.

So, whether it's a puzzle piece that symbolizes unity and acceptance in a diverse community or a rainbow-lit world, what I want to share is a way to spread awareness and acceptance out to the world. I couldn't think of a better way to do it than with BOOKS! I want to share with you some great reads to introduce ALL children to the diversity in characters and representation of all colors, minds, strengths, and sizes!

Xo,

Marysol Perez (and my little man, Maximo)
